In her new role as an economic development specialist for the Office of Economic Development, Elli will work to connect communities to resources across the university. She is passionate about working with organizations to plan and evaluate their work in a way that is consistent with their mission and goals, especially in the areas of agricultural and community development.
Prior to moving to the New River Valley, Travis coordinated international development projects in the areas of economic training, health, monitoring and evaluation, disaster management, and gender and social inclusion for Development & Training Services, Inc., a small, women-owned business in Arlington, Virginia.
A native of Washington, DC, Travis recently received a Master’s degree from Virginia Tech in Agricultural and Applied Economics. For her MS research, she designed and implemented a study in rural Ecuador that analyzed the impact of text messages as a tool for sharing knowledge and encouraging the adoption of agricultural technologies among farmers. Travis received a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Russian from Indiana University, Bloomington and has studied abroad in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Debrecen, Hungary. She is currently pursuing a PhD at Virginia Tech in Agricultural, Leadership, and Community Education with a focus on evaluation methodology.
